I’ve learned so much in these 12 months, from the challenges of building my own business to the joy of seeing my hard work pay off. Sometimes, I still have to pinch myself – I’m actually a writer now!

From Employee to Empowered: My Freelance Journey So Far

Hey there, lovely readers!

I wanted to take a moment to tell you a little bit more about myself and what I have been up to since Clare H Writes was created.

Writing has always been part of my everyday life, whether it was writing a detailed report on a company and its products and services during my day job or writing a post for my personal blog in my spare time, it’s a skill I have continuously honed throughout the years.

When I decided to take the leap from full time employee to self employed writer – and it felt like a HUGE leap – I had to sit down and remind myself of the skills I had to be able to do this. The things I had been writing on a daily basis such as company profiles, e-mail templates, checklists, processes and newsletters were all confidential, so I couldn’t share these with potential clients.

I panicked, wondering how could I possibly showcase my writing with an empty portfolio?

Fortunately, I landed myself a regular spot with a small company and soon I was updating their website copy, creating engaging social media posts and even starting a quarterly newsletter for their customers. I also revamped their admin set-up by building a brand new customer database, creating templates to use for customer correspondence and giving the online filing system a complete overhaul.

Each day is a chance for me to not only help to improve the businesses of others but also to challenge myself and enhance my skill set. I no longer wake up dreading the working day ahead, but instead, I can’t wait to get started.

The success of my clients is the success of Clare H Writes.

Will We Be Replaced By Robots? Here’s My Two Pennies Worth

You may have heard a lot of noise recently about AI writing. It isn’t something new, however, the recent launch of ChatGPT has brought AI writing to the forefront of everyone’s minds.

What is AI writing?

AI writing is software that can be used to create something as small as a single sentence, to a complete article.

Does this mean the end of human writers?

This has been the big debate recently and I personally don’t believe it is. The majority of people prefer dealing with humans. Does anyone really enjoy speaking to those annoying robots on the phone who can never understand what you are saying? or the online chat that just keeps referring you right back to where you started?

So I don’t see writing as any different, people want that human touch when they are reading. AI doesn’t draw from personal experience and you can’t have an in-depth discussion about what you really want from it.

Take these two descriptions shown in the image, one is written by me and the other by AI, can you tell which is which?

In case you were unsure, the first example is AI.

The first is very formal and to the point, and the second tells more of a story, something you can relate to and is written in a less formal tone. The question to ask yourself is, which example would you like to continue reading?

Will writers use AI?

AI can be useful, and many writers already use it for things such as spelling or grammar checking, rewriting sentences and research purposes.

I recently attended a webinar on AI writing and someone suggested that using AI to research was cheating, but someone quite rightly pointed out that AI would simply be pulling the information from other online sources, which is exactly what Google does, which is most likely where the information would be searched for before using AI.

Writers have been using AI for some time now, for example, Grammarly, is widely used to check spelling & grammar by some of the most accomplished writers and it could be argued that even Google is AI.

So there you have it. AI isn’t something I have a lot of experience with, but it’s certainly something I want to learn more about as I view it as a tool to enhance my own skills, but I do honestly believe that you can’t beat words that come from the mind of a real human.

From KYC to Copywriting: What Motivated Me To Become a Freelance Writer

Although I haven’t always had a career in the writing industry, writing has been a huge part of my everyday life.

It wasn’t until recently, I realised I had been writing copy and content, pretty much since I could spell. As a child, I would fill endless notebooks with stories and ideas, when I got into my teens I would write magazine articles, for my own imaginary magazine.

When I started working in the city, my role within KYC (Know Your Client) would involve writing detailed reports on companies and individuals, where I would research what the company or individual did and how they made their money, then I would make my recommendations as to whether they were deemed a suitable customer for the bank.

I also spent time creating e-mail templates to send internally and externally, checklists and processes for other staff members to use, and I even wrote a few newsletters. If there was something to be done with words, I wanted to be involved.

After finishing work, I would go on to do more admin for my partner at the time, who ran two businesses. I would spend evenings writing emails, invoices, and quotes and working on advertising, I even went on Talk Sport radio once because of a successful advertising idea I had.

When I was in my late twenties I decided to start a blog, purely for my own entertainment and I felt very Sarah Jessica Parker, although I was too nervous to publish this.

A few years later, I decided to be a bit braver. I started a new blog, which I did publish, although under a pseudonym. I found myself using every spare moment to write blog posts, some personal, some informative, and some purely for fun. I have been writing that blog for 6 years and still love it just as much.

Last year, I realised that life is too short to not do what you love. So, I decided to pursue writing full-time. I began helping family and friends with website copy and social media content, and that’s how Clare H Writes was born.

I now have regular work, where I create and update company logos, and write email templates, blog posts, social media posts, website copy and customer newsletters. I absolutely love what I do and I am so glad I made that leap.
